Cultural Awareness Program

Please note:  Although the program has been developed, we are not at the delivery stage yet.  We will update this website with launch dates as soon as possible.

The cultural awareness program, Looking Forward, Looking Back: Australia Through Our Eyes is our new Cultural Awareness program for professionals.  It reinforces Brisbane Catholic Education’s strong commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history, recognising the first Australians are from one of the oldest continuing cultures in human history.

The program has been designed to promote knowledge and understanding of the first Australians cultures and experiences, to help non-Aboriginal and non-Torres Strait Islander professionals relate and engage more effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Participants

This course is designed for professionals working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, families, colleagues and communities, primarily in education. It is also suitable for professionals in other areas such as health, justice, employment and community engagement. The course would also be of value to anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories.

Modes of delivery

The course will be delivered in face-to-face workshops in a one or two-day format or as several twilight sessions depending on participants’ requirements. It will incorporate theoretical, historical and cultural modules and will include practical activities and small group discussions. The focus will be on applying skills and shared knowledge to develop culturally safe interactions with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, parents, community, clients and colleagues.
